Northern Isles

Also known as: Kiegnarrzsk, the Northern Isles, the Isles, Sulkorring, the Sulkorring

The Northern Isles, called Kiegnarrzsk in Kiegzogg, the language of the Kiegzorn, are the island chain off the western coast of Raetun, famed as a fortress of legendary sailors.

The isles are the surviving peaks of the supercontinent of Mokrae, left above water after Oykrig, in a grief-fueled rage at the climactic moments of the War in Heaven, tore the supercontinent in two, and the goddess Braekhun flooded the central capital region. For this reason they are also sometimes called the Sulkorring, “Drowning Peaks.” The southernmost isle, the highest of those that remain, is the last refuge of the dwindling Jonorn, once the rulers of Emperor Raeus’ empire, the greatest civilization Nurrheim had ever known.

The Northern Isles are the homeland of the Kiegzorn, and the seat of the line of Yanterr Wave-master, first king of the Northern Isles, whose legendary raids on Telnon terrorised the Braekhunites for generations. Yanterr’s line ruled the isles until civil war broke out between his descendants, leaving the fortress fatally divided. It fell at last to Garðwin I, who conquered it on his way to extending Þordil the Great’s dominion westward.

The Isles have proven, across the centuries, a stubbornly resistant prize, hard to take, harder still to hold.
