Second Voityllic Rift
Second Voityllic Rift, also called the Firestorm, was the second incursion of the Moslager into Nurrheim, and the cataclysm by which the dating of the age is anchored. Years before its opening are numbered Before Firestorm (BFS); years after, After Firestorm (AFS). The singular zero of the calendar, OFS, falls on the day the Rift opened.
The Invasion
The Moslager collided his invasion plane against the Third Plane through a rift constructed beneath the great capital of the Infernhul. With the armies of Niverine and Oglethar already locked in civil war, the Doghullic-Daidaen Civil War, ignited by Exar’s curse, the timing could not have been worse. The Moslager’s general Adersxitzzqynjer sought to seize ground before any organized force could oppose him.
The defense fell to Yyantranu, grandson of Hhargtkle and son of the murdered Ættiraxes, who held the passage down the volcanic peak alongside his comrade Praethornyn.
The Deaths of the Princes
The arrival of the warring brothers’ armies altered the course of the battle. The Moslager seized control of Niverine’s mind, forcing the dragon-prince to wound his own brother Oglethar, and then to die in his defense. The intervention prematurely ousted the Moslager from the engagement, leaving Adersxitzzqynjer as the sole pillar of a crumbling invasion.
Both princes were dead by day’s end. The civil war they had been fighting died with them.
The Ascension
With the invasion failing, Praethornyn turned on Yyantranu, confessing he had plotted with the enemy to gain extra-mortality. In a fit of rage and despair, Yyantranu plunged at the weakened Adersxitzzqynjer, and the two fell together into the maw of the invasion plane. The general was killed by the fall; Yyantranu, not by his own will, absorbed the entire dimension and the whole of the Moslager’s legion with it.
He emerged in the backdoor of the Third Plane, the flaw Prox had failed to seal millennia before, and took it as his own realm, Yyaterik, sworn ever afterward to safeguard Nurrheim against the Moslager’s return.
Aftermath
The Firestorm ended in 1 AFS. The world it left behind was unmade: the Old Empire of the Daia in ruins, Mount Eksnothrar erupting alongside her sister peaks, two great exoduses streaming from southern Mok. The Drakhul went north under the twelve warlords from whose ranks Viedskavn would eventually crown himself Grand Tyrant. The Dai’dou fared worse: under Moothgar, who had backed Oglethar in the War in Heaven and earned Niverine’s lasting enmity, they were driven into a retreat that would end, two centuries later, at the hands of Bæurn Serpent-bane.
Þordil the Great was born on the day of the Firestorm. Within a single human lifetime, that child would forge the empire that named the calendar after the catastrophe that had birthed him.
