Salt-bane

Also known as: Leviathan of the Deep, Abyssal Demon

Salt-bane, known in legend as the Leviathan of the Deep and oft called the abyssal demon, was a bizarrely oversized Adamerr with a monstrous streak. First appearing in record around five hundred before fire-storm, it patrolled the great scar that nearly split the Sea of Garðwin in two. Any ship brave enough to take the shortcut at the wrong time was attacked and inevitably sunk.

During its tenure as tyrant of that heavily used naval route, the leviathan attacked the armada of Jolim Salt-lung. In the frenzy the young King of Kiegnarrzsk went overboard and was lost in the desperate retreat. The unreal and most perilous journey of Jolim’s eventual return to the Northern Isles immortalized the beast in song and saga as Salt-bane.

The legend was disseminated to every corner of Raetun, and a great many arrogant slayers were enticed to challenge it. Among its most noteworthy suitors of death were Garðwin I, Great-storm and his son Bæurn Serpent-bane. However powerful and feared he was by those born on land, Garðwin was no match for the serpent and perished like so many before him.

Bæurn carried the vendetta with the beast for years. The reckoning came when Salt-bane intercepted his voyage north to Mok, where he was bound to confront the Dai’dou Maerxsikyst, one of Oglethar’s heirs. In that interception Bæurn slew the leviathan, and was crowned as Salt-bane’s slayer; he then sailed on, and perished only later in the slaying of Maerxsikyst itself.

Salt-bane’s corpse was nigh impossible to miss. Subsequent measurements estimated its length at over fifty meters, its titanic body heavily scarred and wounded upon.
